Fís - Films in Schools

Fis Project

FÍS in West Cork Education Centre 2007

FÍS (translated as Vision) and also initials stand for Film in School, is an initiative of Department of Education and Science designed to introduce the medium of film as a support to the Primary School Curriculum.

This is the second year of the FIS film project in West Cork and it has turned out to be even bigger and better than in 2006. This is difficult to envisage as the school which won the overall national award for film making in the Primary School last October was from West Cork. A number of the films also went on to win awards at the Cork Film Festival and the Fresh Film Festival in Limerick.
However the event has become so popular that the Cimemax Cinema in Bantry had to hold two showings as the audience could not be accommodated in one sitting.
Eight schools created films this year and an additional feature is the use of animation in a number of them.

It began as a Pilot project which ran from 2000 to 2003 in 28 schools. The Project was minstreamed into 50 new schools in September 2004 and due to its success the project has been mainstreamed into a further 25 schools in 2006. Five of these schools are located in West Cork.
The project is managed and delivered at national level by The National Centre for Technology in Education (NCTE) and Dun Laoghaire Institute of Art Design and Technology (IADT)
The project is managed at a local level by West Cork Education Centre through ICT Advisor, Kathleen Lowney.
Schools in the catchment area for West Cork Education Centre were invited to apply to participate in the project. A large number of applications were received and from those, five schools were selected using criteria laid down by NCTE and IADT
They are : Togher National School
Clonakilty BNS
Sherkin Island School
Ballinadee National School
Kilmeen National School

Additional schools participating in Film Making are: Scoil Eoin, Innishannon,Kealkill National School and Our Lady of Mercy in bantry.
A structured programme of training and support is provided to teachers (2 per school) involved in the project.
The training for West Cork Teachers involved in the project is delivered by Kathleen Lowney in the West Cork Education Centre and consists of film making techniques and theory, using digital video recording equipment and film editing equipment as well as the Primary Curriculum application of film process and using film as a curriculum integration tool.
The 2006/2007 school year ended with regional screening and celebration of the project in Bantry Cinema on June 21st. Thisl provided students and teachers with an opportunity to celebrate their work and the work of the other schools. Each school received an award from a number of categories (best original music, best script, best use of special effects etc) and a FIS Certificate. From these films 1 was selected to go forward to the National FÍS Film Awards in October in the Helix.
However the whole enjoyment and educational value of the film making process takes precedence over the competitive aspect.
The response from teachers is hugely positive and the project has generated excitement and enthusiasm in the schools involved. This excitement is communicated to the pupils which guarantees the success of the project. The standard of the films completed to date is amazing and the local screening event in Bantry will be an exciting affair. The use of film as a medium of teaching and learning is innovative, empowering and exciting and makes school an exciting place to be for the modern child.

The project is not exclusive to five schools selected for project. Lesson plans and technical manual can be downloaded from website: www.fis.ie and used in every school.

Dissolving Boundaries

Project Description - Dissolving Boundaries uses Information and Communications Technology (ICT) to facilitate cross-cultural educational linkages between schools in the North and South of Ireland.

The first phase of the Dissolving Boundaries project began in 1999 with a total of 52 schools in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. These schools were selected from the primary, post primary and special sectors. Each school in Northern Ireland was linked with a partner school in the Republic of Ireland. Schools communicated by means of computer conferencing and video conferencing.

The project grew out of the successful project entitled "This Island We Live On" which ran from 1998 - 1999. Initial funding was provided by governments north and south, with extra resources provided by Dell Computers and Eircom. Dell Computers donated 200 award-winning multimedia PCs while Eircom provided video conferencing solutions and internet connectivity to all the schools.

The initial phase, 1999 - 2002, proved so successful that both governments agreed to extend funding for a further 60 schools in Phase 2, from 2002 - 2003 and another cohort of 60 schools in Phase 3, from 2003 - 2004. This means, that to date, some 172 schools have taken part in the project.

Project Activities - The students in the schools:

An Leabhar Beag -
ICT, Poetry and Art Project in conjunction with West Cork Arts Centre.

Eight schools (six Primary and two Post Primary) are involved in this project. The project originated as a response to An Leabhar Mór, a book of Gaelic verse which is currently on tour in Ireland and will be exhibited in West Cork Arts Centre in May 2006. Schools in West Cork produced poetry and exchanged the work with their designated partner school. Children in their partner school responded artistically to the poetry.

All the poetry and art work was returned to the West Cork Education Centre before Easter. All the art work was scanned and a video was made of the children reciting their poetry. A DVD of the work is currently on display in the West Cork Arts Centre and West Cork Education Centre in May alongside the book “An Leabhar Mór”.

To see all the work the children produced simply follow this link!

eTwinning is a new scheme enabling you to work with other schools in Europe through Information and Communications Technology (ICT). It can be a simple and straightforward way of finding partner schools and working on a range of activities. eTwinning is not about creating extra work but providing a framework for exciting curriculum work with partners in another country.

An information meeting will take place at West Cork Education Centre on Tuesday 9th May at 7pm to find out how to register, how to find a partner and the kind of projects you can do.

Please contact the Centre at 023 56756 to reserve a place or email Harriet ictassist@eircom.net
