| Connecting the School Computer Network (LAN) to
the Router |
|
| Once the broadband connection and Router have been installed
and tested, the School Network (LAN) must be connected to
the Router. A "Guideline
on connecting the school computer network (LAN) to the Router"
has been developed to assist schools in this activity. This
job will normally be done by an IT Professional as it is not
for the faint-hearted! |

In order for a school to be
connected to the Schools Broadband Network, an up-to-date
Internet Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) must be in operation.
Further information from the NCTE regarding AUP's is available
at:

|
Alternatively, you can download and adapt
the
West Cork Education Centre's Sample
AUP. |

Anti-
Virus Software
The new schools broadband network will protect school computers
from Internet derived viruses that must pass through the
central virus management of the network before being stopped.
However it is still possible to get your school computer
infected from locally inputted media such as floppy disks,
storage keys, etc. For this reason it is vital to maintain
up to date anti-virus on every computer that is connected
or connects occasionally to your school network. This new
offer from Symantec to schools is effective as of October
1st, so schools can order right away from most resellers.
Schools that bought a licence last year have AV coverage
until the end of November 2006. However they should order
their new licence as soon as possible as delivery may take
up to three weeks.

| Internet Safety comprises of three main issues.
They are: |
|
| |
|
|
| 1. |
Having up-to-date Anti-virus
Software installed on every machine.
(See section on Symantec Anti-Virus
Offer) |
|
| |
|
|
| 2. |
Having an appropriate level of Content-Filtering.
Fortunately this is done for us by the NCTE at Router level.
However, it is imperative for each school to choose what they
deem to be an appropriate option for their school and to return
the CF1 Form before broadband can be connected.
